Valentine's Day Songs
I Love You
The Barney Theme Song
Tune: This Old Man
I love you,
You love me,
We're a happy family
With a great big hug
And a kiss from me to you
Won't you say you love me too.
I love you,
You love me,
We're best friends
Like friends should be
With a great big hug
And a kiss from me to you
Won't you say you love me too.
Yes, I do
Sung to: Three Blind Mice
I love you, I love you
Yes, I do, yes, I do
I love you every night and day,
I love you when I work and play,
I love you in so many ways,
I love you!
I Am Making Valentines
Sung to: Mary Had a Little Lamb
I am making valentines,
Valentines, valentines.
I am making valentines,
For the ones I love.
Watch me as I cut and paste,
Cut and paste, cut and paste,
Watch me as I cut and paste,
My special valentines.
See me mail my valentines,
Valentines, valentines,
See me mail my valentines,
To the ones I love.
H-E-A-R-T
Sung to: Bingo
To show you like your special friends,
Just give them each a heart.
H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T,
Each heart says I like you!
I'll Make A Valentine
Sung to: London Bridge
I'll make a bright red valentine,
Valentine, valentine.
I'll make a bright red valentine,
And give it right to you.
I'll trim it with lace and bows,
Lace and bows, lace and bows.
I'll trim it with lace and bows,
And give it right to you.
I'm a Little Valentine
Sung to: I'm a Little Teapot
I'm a little valentine,
Made for you,
Of paper, lace, and a dab of glue.
I'm signed and sealed and on my way,
To say, "I love you" on Valentine's Day!
Valentine Recipes
Cornflake Hearts
Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter, 3 cups miniature marshmallows, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, 1 tsp red or pink food coloring, 4 cups corn flakes, small heart candies (like the ones you find for decorating cupcakes in the baking isle).
Directions: Melt butter, add marshmallows, stirring until all marshmallows are melted. Add extract and food coloring; stir until it is a uniform red or pink color. When mixture is smooth, add corn flakes; mix well but gently so as not to crush the cornflakes. Form into heart shapes on sheets of waxed paper, decorate with candy hearts. Let cool.
Valentine Cookies
Ingredients: Sugar cookie dough, pink icing, sprinkles, heart cookie cutter.
Directions: You can make the sugar cookie dough yourself, or you can just purchase the premade kind that comes in the tube in the refridgerated section of the grocery store. Roll the dough out, cut out a bunch of hearts, cook them, and then decorate them. Kids love making cookies!
Krispie Kisses
I don't know anyone who doesn't like rice krispies treats. The basic recipe is below. You'll need a batch of the basic recipe and a very small funnel. Make a batch of rice krispie treats and let it cool slightly so that you can handle it. Butter the inside of the funnel. Using your hands, pack the rice krispie treats into the funnel, then turn it over onto a cookie sheet to cool. There are a couple of variations on this basic recipe. You can dip your kisses in chocolate to make a more traditional kiss, but it is messy. You can also make them with love messages inside by writing a message on a strip of paper and stringing it through the small end of the funnel so that only part of it will be inside the kiss, then pack the cereal mixture inside the funnel.
Ingredients: 3 tablespoons margarine or butter, 1 package (10 oz., about 40) regular marshmallows or 4 cups miniature marshmallows, 6 cups rice krispies cereal
Directions: In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt margarine and marshmallows on HIGH for 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute. Stir mixture until smooth. Add rice krispies cereal, stirring until well coated. When slightly cooled, shape cereal mixture into desired shape using buttered hands, or lay out flat on waxed paper. Allow to cool.
Edible Valentine Cards
Place a graham cracker on a plate and spread pink or white icing on it. Use candy hearts, sprinkles, etc. to create a Valentine Card that is completely edible.
Valentine Cupcakes
This is a clever idea that I got from a toddler's activity book. The hearts don't always come out right, but it's fun for the kids to cook with marbles.
Wash and dry enough marbles so that there is one for every cupcake you are making. Line muffin tins with paper baking cups. Put one marble in each muffin spot between the paper baking cup and the baking tin. Pour in your prepared cake mix and bake according to package directions. When they are done and slightly cooled, pop them out of the tin and you'll see that the cupcakes are heart shapes. Frost and decorate. NOTE: Watch out for the marbles... they take a little while to cool!
Heartwiches
Make a peanut butter and jelly Sandwich and use a heart cookie cutter to make heart shaped sandwiches. My kids love heartwiches!
Valentine's Day Play
Heart Hunt: Hide candy hearts around the house, then turn the kids loose to search for them. You can do the same idea with "kisses."
Counting Heart Game: Cut out 1 large hearts (4-6 inches across) from pink construction paper. On one side of the hearts, number them from two to twelve. On the other side, write some sort of message or instruction. (For example: Act like a dog. Cry like a baby. Sing your favorite song. Hop on one foot. Give someone a hug. Give your Mom a kiss. etc.) Place all the hearts face down on the floor in order so that they can be easily counted. Take turns with your child rolling a pair of dice. Help them count the dots on the dice and then counting that many hearts (if you make 12) or recognizing the correct number on the heart. Turn the heart over, read to them what it says, and have them act it out. This is a lot of fun once they understand how it works!
