Stand Up Foam Seal
This is a super simple Winter craft for children who can use scissors well. You could create an entire Winter scene using this basic technique. I've provided you with all the templates you'll need to create the seal.
What You'll Need:
- Brown Fun Foam
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Black permanent marker
- The templates provided
- Foam glue (optional)
What to Do:
1. Print out the templates below and trace them onto a brown piece of fun foam.
2. Cut out all the pieces. Where you see lines on the inside of the template is where you will cut a thin slot to fit the pieces together. The slots will be wider or thinner, depending on the thickness of your foam. Make them thin to start with -- you can always widen them if necessary, but if you make the slots too wide or too long, the pieces won't fit together correctly.
3. Begin fitting the pieces together. Fit the front legs into the slot on the front end of the body. Fit the tail into the slot on the rear end of the body. If you've fitted the pieces together correctly, then the seal should stand up on his own.
(Optional) You can put glue into the slot to make the seal more sturdy.
4. Use the permanent marker to draw eyes.
Variations:
The brown foam is so dark that it's hard to see the eyes. You can get around that by creating foam eyes from a different color of foam scrap. It's also fun to glue on some wiggle eyes!
Here's another fun idea -- cut out a fish from another color of foam (you'll only need a scrap) and fit it into the seal's mouth using the same technique. This is very cute!
