Polymer Clay Snowflake Votives

This is a wonderful way to turn thrift shop drinking glasses into beautiful Christmas or winter decorations. Use this easy to make candle to spice up a centerpiece or create a soft mood around the Christmas tree.

This craft is very challenging for children but great for teens.

Materials:

  • A small drinking glass
  • Transparent polymer clay
  • Acrylic Paint - 713 Coastal Blue (FolkArt by PLAID)
  • DA036 True Blue (Americana by DecoArt)
  • 11206 Silver (Anita's)
  • Small Snowflake Stamps (Stampin Up #9206-00)
  • Clear Acrylic Matte Sealer (PLAID)
  • Spray Glitter (Decorating Magic)
  • Future Floor Wax
  • Votive Candle
  • Sponge
  • Sharp Knife
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling Pin
  • Corn Starch

Instructions:

1. Choose a glass that is big enough to set a votive candle inside -- juice glasses work well. Clean the glass of any grease using soap and water. Dry the glass thoroughly and set aside.

2. Work the polymer clay in your hands until it softens and becomes pliable. Roll the clay out on parchment paper using the rolling pin until it is big enough to cover you glass and is about 1/16th to 1/32nd of an inch thick. (You can also run in through a pasta machine at a setting of 1 or 2.)

TIP: If you have trouble with the clay sticking to the rolling pin, lightly brush it with corn starch.

3. Use your sponge to dab small amounts of the dark blue paint on the first snowflake stamp and randomly stamp the rolled out clay. Repeat with the second stamp and the other two colors until you have the design you want. Be sure not to use too much paint on your stamp or your design will come out fuzzy.

4. Once the paint dries, turn the clay over with the stamped side down. Center your glass on the clay and roll the clay around it, smoothing it down as you go until you have created a cylinder around the glass. Cut the clay with a sharp knife to create a seam on one side of the glass and carefully smooth it together. Trim any extra clay from the top and bottom of the glass to create a smooth edge. Note that the clay will stick to the glass without any adhesive.

Bake the clay in the oven at 250 degrees for 20 minutes or follow the clay manufacturer's instructions.

5. After glass cools, lightly spray with glitter. When glitter dries, spray very lightly with sealer to hold glitter in place.

6. Finish candle by brushing on 5-6 thin coats of Future Floor Wax. Pop in a candle and you're done.
