Ocean Crafts

Ocean crafts are a lot of fun for kids... here are some of the ideas I've come up with.

Baby Beluga Whale Puppet - Print out the Baby Beluga Puppet Template. Color the beluga whale. Fold on the dotted line. Cut out. Insert a craft stick up to the fold and perpendicular to the whale and glue in place. Glue the whale with wrong sides together.

Paper Bag Whale - Stuff a small paper bag with newspaper and seal it with a rubber band. The stuffed part will be the whale's body and the sealed end will be it's tail. Paint the bag what ever color you choose and let dry. Cut 2 circles out of black paper and glue on bag for whale's eyes. Cut a spout out of blue construction paper and glue on top (a spout is shaped like 2 capital J's back to back). Draw on the mouth with a black marker.

Pasta Sea Shells - This project is done with the shell pasta that's used to make stuffed shells. Color the shells with markers or paint them. Spread a little glue on them and then sprinkle with glitter. Let dry.

Textured Starfish - Print the textured starfish template onto heavy paper or cardstock and cut out. Paint it the desired color and sprinkle it with sand while the paint is still wet. Let dry.

Baggie Ocean Scene - Open a ziplock bag and squirt some gel toothpaste inside. Remove as much air as possible and seal it. Move the toothpaste around inside the bag to coat the inside. Glue ocean shapes or stick stickers to the outside of the bag.

Sandpaper Sea Horse - Print out the sea horse template. Trace the template onto the back of sandpaper and cut out. Color over the top of the sandpaper with crayons, being sure to press hard. Lay the sea horse rough side down onto a paper bag and iron it with a low heat iron to melt the crayon. Let cool.

Sea Scapes - Empty and clean a clear plastic bottle with a lid (like a soda bottle). Put the following objects into the bottle: about a ¼ of sand, a tablespoon or so of glitter, small sea shells, plasic fish, and other "sea" objects. Tint some water blue with food coloring and pour it into the bottle. Put some hot glue into the lid of the bottle and screw it on to seal the bottle closed. Let cool. Now you can tip the bottle back and forth to make different sea scapes.

Textured Sea Horse - Print the textured sea horse template onto heavy paper or cardstock and cut out. Paint it the desired color and sprinkle it with sand while the paint is still wet. Let dry.

Paper Bag Jellyfish - Stuff a small paper bag with newspaper and wrap a rubber band around the bottom to close. Paint the bag purple and let dry. Draw on a face with a black marker. Staple or tape 8 long streamers into the closed end of the bag.

Lifesize Whale - Okay, it's not really lifesize, but it will feel that way to a child. Stuff a large plastic trash bag with newspaper. Tape the tail and shape it into a whale shape. Tape on a big construction paper circles for eyes. Cut out a mouth shape and tape that on too. You could also make this look like a killer whale by cutting out pieces of white construction paper and taping them on in the right pattern on a black bag.

Ocean Recipes

Sandy Beaches - Tint some frosting light blue and spread on a sugar cookie. Dip half the cookie into sugar. Cookies look like an ocean with a sandy beach.

Hotdog Octopus - Slice a hotdog in half long way about ¾ of the way up the hotdog. Slice each of those slices in half, making 4 legs. Now slice each of the 4 legs in half to make 8 legs. Boil the hotdog to make the legs curl up like an octopus.

Marshmallow Octopus - Place a large marshmallow on a plate. Use licorice pieces to make 8 legs by poking them into the side of the marshmallow.
