March Crafts

March is another one of those months that's filled with great crafting and activity opportunities. After all, there's always Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day... and some years Easter is even in March.

In my area of the world, we begin seeing signs of Spring in March... another great opportunity for children's activities and crafts! Plus, there's also the "in like a lion out like a lamb thing"... lots of stuff to do there!

Here are a few of my favorite activities for the month on March:

Blossom A Day Project - For March, here is Brussels, we're anticipating blossom on the cherry tree in front of our house, so we built our own tree out of branches (basically, stuffed a bunch of branches in an old flower pot) and have started making blossom for it. We've made lady bugs out of egg cartons (we just painted one section of the egg carton and glued black dots, pom-poms, and paper 'legs' on it), stars covered with aluminum foil and glitter glue, a 'rainbow' (strips of coloured paper strung onto a pipe cleaner) and a daffodil (again, one section of an egg carton, painted yellow and glued onto a flower-shaped piece of yellow construction paper). Every few days our tree gets a new blossom. It's been a really fun way to introduce the concept of Spring to my almost-3-year-old.

Duck Feet Painting - A spring art activity that I have used often with toddlers and preschoolers that they really enjoy is "Duck Feet Painting". We fill a tray with some yellow paint and use spatulas to make the webbed footprints on the paper. Playing or singing spring/duck songs during the activity reinforces the "duck" theme. Ex. Six Little Ducks, 5 Little Ducks, etc. -- Submitted by Tracy

Paper Plate Streamer Rings - I don't have a good title for this little craft, but the kids enjoyed playing with it. Cut the middle out of a paper plate so that you have a ring. You can decorate the ring if you want to, but it's really not necessary. Then staple crepe paper streamers around three quarters of the ring on the outside. The kids then hold onto the ring at the spot without any streamers and run in the breeze. You can also use ribbon, strips of paper, or yarn instead of streamers.

Cute Little Easter Lamb - This cute little Easter lamb is sure to bring a smile to anyone's face who sees it! It may look a little complicated, but it's easy enough for even younger children to make with a little help.

Paper Plate Lion - Paint a paper plate yellow or tan. Cut several 2 x 3 (approximate) inch strips of orange or brown construction paper. Glue strips of paper all around the plate to make the lion's mane. Draw on a face with marker. You can also do this with yarn around the face, but it is more difficult for younger children to manage.

Mardi Gras Necklace - Paint pieces of dry pasta or color them with markers... the kind of pasta that you can use as beads. Then string the dry pasta onto pieces of yard to make a necklace. Super easy! Little kids always love art they can wear!

Irish Neck Tie - This St. Patrick's Day tie is quick to make and a lot of fun to wear! In fact, you probably won't get it off your kids even after St. Patty's because they are so fun and silly.

Stuffed Shamrocks - Fold a section of a large paper bag in half and cut 2 identical shamrocks out. Staple them together all the way around, leaving a hole. Stuff newspaper inside the hole to puff up the shamrock. Staple the hole shut. Paint green and sprinkle with green glitter while still wet. Let dry. Use a hole punch to make a hole in the top and tie a piece of yarn at the top to hang.

Easy Egg-ceptional Experiments - There are lots of easy and fun science experiments that you can do involving eggs. Even younger kids will get a kick out of some of them, although they won't understand the "science" behind the trick. Here's a few we've come up with.
