Letter M Activities and Craft Ideas
Below you will find projects and activities that will help you and your child explore this letter. Keep in mind that this theme page is really aimed at younger children, up to about age 5. Don't be fooled into thinking that these projects and activities are too simple for this age group. Young children thrive on simplicity - it gives them the opportunity to work independently, to understand the task at hand, and to "own" their work. Immersing them in projects and activities that center around a particular theme (in this case the letter "M") allows them to gain a greater understanding of the theme and internalize it.
There are many projects and activites listed here. Don't think that you have to do them all. You can pick just a few things to do if you want, then move on to another theme. On the other hand, you can choose to spend several days on this theme and do all the projects. In addition, you can incorporate some of your own ideas into this theme to truly make it your own. This is just a guide to get you started.
Words Beginning With "M"
Talk with your child about the letter "M", the sound it makes, and words that start with this letter. If you are using some kind of phonics program with your child, this would be the time to work on "M" within the program.
NOTE: If you are considering a phonics program to help your child learn to recognize letters, learn their sounds, and eventually read, then I can personally recommend Frontline Phonics
. It is an excellent program for younger children and blends nicely with this theme approach to crafting.

"M" Projects
Monkey Puppet
Print out the monkey template in color or black and white. Color the parts if necessary and cut them out. Cut out 4 strips of brown construction paper that are about 1 inch wide and 11-12 inches long. Take each of your strips of paper and fold them like an accordian so that when they are folded they are about an inch square. These are the monkey's arms and legs. Glue a hand or foot to the end of each accordian strip. Glue the monkey's head onto it's body. Glue each of the arms and legs onto the right spot on the body. You can turn this monkey into a funny puppet by gluing a craft stick to the back.
Macaroni Picture
Supplies: 1 sheet of heavier construction paper per child; assorted pasta shapes (or you could just use plain macaroni), and glue.
Directions: Let your child create a picture of macaroni, glue it to the paper and let it dry. They can even use markers to color the macaroni before they glue it down.
Paper Plate Monkey
Supplies: A paper plate, brown paint, brown construction paper, tan construction paper, glue, and this template.
Directions: Paint your paper plate brown and let dry. Use the template below to cut out the ears and face of the monkey out of tan colored construction paper. (If you want, you could just paint on the face using the template.) Glue the ears onto the back of the paper plate and glue the face on the front. Use a marker to draw in the eyes, nose and mouth.
