Aug 26, Kid Craft Ideas

Coming up with new kid craft ideas is probably the most difficult part of doing crafts with kids. The first hurdle to overcome is deciding what is age-appropriate for your child. This can be especially difficult with very young children. After all, every child is different. Some have better coordination or attention spans for their age than others. You know your child better than anyone, so use your own instincts on this one. Crafting with older children can also be difficult because you have to find craft ideas that will keep their interest and be challenging enough for them to do.

Jan 29, How To Encourage Early Reading

Reading to your kids regularly is the number one way to encourage a love of books in your child. It helps them to develop their imagination more than any video or software program can. Reading out loud allows you to spend good quality time with your child and makes them feel important. Lastly, reading to your child helps them make the connection between written words and spoken language. All of these things associate positive feelings with reading and encourage a love of books.

Jan 29, Is My Child Ready To Read?

Is My Child Ready To Read? Every child learns differently. My oldest has to be led to where you want her to go, then left alone to think about it until she puts it together. She doesn't want you to know that she is working on things and she flat out refuses to do try at anything that isn't important to her. Then out of the blue she will surprise you with a breakthrough. I used to think she was just kind of lazy until I finally figured her out. She thinks constantly.

Jan 29, Kid Crafting and Learning

Once I made the switch from trying to make them learn to sneaking in some learning, they began to make remarkable progress. My oldest started coming to me to help her with her letters, started telling me what words began with which letters, and began making up silly songs about letters. This may not sound like much, but she was adamantly against learning her letters by the time I wised up and changed my methods. She came a long way in a short time. My son, on the other hand, seemed to pick things up fairly easily and didn't mind a bit of structure. I felt like I was definitely on to something and began using all kinds of different learning programs as part of my crafting themes. As with everything, you will have to experiment and find out what works best with your own child. But below are some of the learning tools and programs that I use with my own kids and incorporate into my theme crafting as much as possible. These are the tools that I have found to be the most useful.

Jan 29, Tips for Building A Great Child's Library On a Small Budget

Tips for Building A Great Child's Library On a Small Budget: Visit the library often and regularly. There are a couple of good reasons to do this. First of all, you can try out a book with your child and see if it is a hit or a dudd. Then you buy only the books that turn out to be the books that your child keeps going back to and asks for often. This also gives you the opportunity to try out a lot of different books, work in themes, or read books for special days -- something you could never do if you had to buy them all.

Jan 28, A Mom's LeapPad Review

My daughter is now 5 years old. She is still playing with the same LeapPad - yes the very same one that I bought in 1999. LeapPad and my daughter have both come a long, long way. LeapPad has come out with a lot of other products, but this one still continues to be my personal favorite. They have a lot more books available for it now, with new learning concepts, phonics, music, and math. Not only that, but there are also different skill levels within each of these areas....

A Mom's My First LeapPad Review: Let me first say that I am a huge fan of LeapPads -- they are a great educational toy! Along the same line, I think the My First LeapPad is a great educational toy. It teaches numbers, letters, shapes, colors, and a variety of other simple, toddler-friendly subjects. The real problem I have with the My First LeapPads are structural and durability issues.

Children who regularly participate in crafting activities have the opportunity to use it as an outlet for the stresses of their lives, enhance their creative abilities, develop better motor skills, and learn to think creatively outside the box. Crafting with children of all ages is a gift they will use for a lifetime!

Don't limit yourself to just the patterns below, let your kids get creative and make up their own finger puppets out of materials they have around the house. You'll be surprised at the finger puppets that they'll come up with! The cups from egg cartons, paper cups, paper bowls, popsicle sticks, pencils, and plastic spoons all make a great start for a finger puppet. Then all you have to do is give it a little character with scraps of felt, yarn, material, fun foam, paper, buttons, etc. When they're all done, help them put on a play with their new creations!

It's a great opportunity to teach children how to think outside the box and use things you wouldn't normally think about painting with in their projects. You can use objects instead of brushes, different kinds of paint, paint different surfaces, use templates or stencils, or even use parts of their bodies. Painting with children can also be a great way for them to experiment, learn cause and affect, learn about colors and how they mix. Here are my kid painting ideas.

So why not send us one of your pictures? If you don't have a picture right now, you better get to work crafting with a child right now... you'll find lots of great ideas here. Then take a picture and come back... We'd really love to see your child's creation. Plus, your child will be so proud to see themselves on a website. It will encourage them to be creative. In fact, if you have a reluctant creator this may be just the thing to inspire them... So won't you post your pictures now?

Sep 5, Top 7 Reasons To Paint Pumpkins

Pumpkins have always been a big deal at our house, even before we had kids. My husband and I used to have contests every year to see who could carve the best pumpkin. I always won. (My husband might have a different opinion about that.) Then one year I took the kids to a local farm where they sold really cute painted pumpkins for $30-$50 per pumpkin. Being a pretty crafty person, I decided that I wanted to try pumpkin painting on my own. Now we paint our pumpkins every year instead of carving them. Sound strange? Well let me give you my top 7 reasons to paint pumpkins and you might just become a pumpkin painter too.

Feb 4, Valentine Crafts: Headband, Lollipop Mice, and Toilet Paper Tube Valentine Butterfly

Now that its February (where did the time go?) its really time to start working on those Valentine Crafts. Today its a Valentine Headband craft, Lollipop Mice, and a Toilet Paper Tube Valentine Butterfly.

Valentine Headband (Super Simple)

Cut a strip of pink construction paper about 2 inches wide, fit it around your childs head to make the headband, and staple together. Next, cut several hearts of different sizes and colors ranging from about 4 inches across to 1 inch across. Glue the hearts onto the headband randomly until the headband is completely covered. Decorate the headband with glitter, sequins, stickers, markers, etc. and let dry completely. Now you have a beautiful Valentines Day headband that kids will absolutely love to wear!

Lollipop Mice (Template Provided)

The inspiration for this craft came from a craft book many years ago, and I created a template for Lollipop Mice here.

Print the template out onto construction paper (red, purple, or pink construction looks great) and cut out the two mouse heads. Use a hole punch or a sharp pair of scissors (adult job) to punch holes in the nose where indicated. Thread a 3-4 inch length pipe cleaner through the top two holes to form whiskers. Do the same with the bottom two holes. Slip a lollipop down through the loops provided by the pipe cleaners. These make really great party favors!

Toilet Paper Tube Valentine Butterfly (Template Provided)

It just wouldnt be crafting if we didnt make something out of a recycled toilet paper cardboard tube. Youll need a cardboard tube, construction paper (any color you choose), gluestick, wiggle eyes (optional), and pipe cleaners (optional). You can use this template for this project if you want.

Wrap a cardboard tube with a sheet of colored construction paper and glue in place. Cut out two hearts that are about 4 inches across and two of a different color that are about 3 inches across. Glue the small hearts into the center of the larger hearts. Glue the two large hearts into place as the butterfly wings. If you dont use the face provided with the template, cut out two small antenas (or use pipe cleaners) and glue in place. Glue on the wiggle eyes and make your butterflys face. My girls really enjoyed making these!

If youre looking for more Valentines Crafts to get started early with your kids, youll find lots of Valentines Day Crafts and Activities listed here.

Valentine's Day just wouldn't be the same if we didn't do some kind of craft with a recycled toilet paper tube! The kids will love this one, and you will too, especially since it includes a complete printable template for the craft!

Sorry this first Christmas Crafts issue is soooo late. We've had a huge amount of family stuff going on, including hosting a 10 year old birthday/slumber party (It was fun, but glad it's over!). There's still plenty of time for Christmas crafts, so hopefully you'll find some great Christmas activities to do with your kids here! We're still hoping to get in two more Christmas issues before the holiday, so let me know if I've missed a really great resource or project idea that's available online.
