February Crafts

Finding great crafts and activities to do in the month of February is really easy. After all, you've got one of the best subjects to work with... Valentine's Day!

In addition to Valentine's Day, you can always do more Winter activities or work with a theme that doesn't necessarily fit in anwhere else... Like dinosaurs for example.

Here are some of my favorite activities to do in the month of February:

Heart Man - You're bound to get a lot of giggles when you make a heart man! This continues to be one of my favorite Valentine projects... In fact, we still make them each year.

Love Is Patient Stone - This painted slate is really easy to do and makes a great gift. The slate is fairly inexpensive and makes a great project to do with older children or even as a special project with a scouting group. It's the kind of craft that parents will keep and hang up all year long!

Silly Heart Head - You're sure to get a big smile and a lot of silly behavior when you finish these little headbands. Kids just can't help but act silly when they slip one of these on... Then they look at themselves in the mirror and see how silly these headbands really are.

Stuffed Hearts - These little stuffed hearts are a nifty little Valentine craft. Kids love them, you can make them simple or more complicated, they are made out of recycled materials, and they are just plain fun. I really love this project!

Krispie Kisses - I don't know anyone who doesn't like rice krispies treats. The basic recipe is below. You'll need a batch of the basic recipe and a very small funnel. Make a batch of rice krispie treats and let it cool slightly so that you can handle it. Butter the inside of the funnel. Using your hands, pack the rice krispie treats into the funnel, then turn it over onto a cookie sheet to cool. There are a couple of variations on this basic recipe. You can dip your kisses in chocolate to make a more traditional kiss, but it is messy. You can also make them with love messages inside by writing a message on a strip of paper and stringing it through the small end of the funnel so that only part of it will be inside the kiss, then pack the cereal mixture inside the funnel.

Ingredients: 3 tablespoons margarine or butter, 1 package (10 oz., about 40) regular marshmallows or 4 cups miniature marshmallows, 6 cups rice krispies cereal

Directions: In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt margarine and marshmallows on HIGH for 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute. Stir mixture until smooth. Add rice krispies cereal, stirring until well coated. When slightly cooled, shape cereal mixture into desired shape using buttered hands, or lay out flat on waxed paper. Allow to cool.

Toilet Paper Tube Penguin - This is a cute little penguin that will come in handy if you're working on a Winter theme, Winter animal theme, or Penguins themselves. I've also shown some options for creating a couple of different kinds of penguins like Emperor Penguins and Macaroni Penguins.

Snow Stars - With paper folded the right way and a little 'cutting edge' imagination, you can create something better than your typical paper snowflake -- you can make Snow Stars!

Hanging Mittens - These little mittens are a lot of fun to make and very adaptable for children of all ages. You can make them look as elaborate or as simple as you like, and they also serve as a nice little winter keepsake craft. Best of all, you probably already have all the materials available!

Snow Tracks - Paint a child's palm only with brown or black paint and stamp it several times onto a sheet of white paper. Guide them to stamp their palm in a straight line across the paper. Dip their index finger into paint and stamp the "toes" around the top of the palm print 3 or 4 times for each palm stamp. When done, it should look like animal paw prints in the snow.

That's what I did with children's crafts and here's what I used!
