Boy's Construction Party

If you read the article I did on my daughter's Princess Party, then you already know how I found Birthday Express .

After the great experience that I'd had throwing that party for my daughter, I knew I wanted to use them for my son's party. He turned three last February and he was just sure that he was going to get a party since his sister got one. Unfortunately, we recently moved and didn't know any kids his age. I decided to throw a big party for him and "invite" only the family. All I had to do was choose a theme.

What theme to choose?

I thought it wouldn't be too hard to choose a theme for my son's party. He is crazy about Bob The Builder, Spiderman, Thomas the Train, "big diggers" (construction equipment), firetrucks and firemen, cars, legos, soldiers, animals, dinosaurs, and just about anything that has to do with construction. You know -- typical boy stuff. I didn't really think there would be much to choose from... boy was I wrong!

My own custom theme...

He would have been absolutely thrilled with any one of these great theme parties! How would I ever choose?

After days of thinking about it, I finally decided on a construction theme. He was getting toys that were construction related, so it seemed like a natural fit. So that left me with a choice between Bob the Builder and the Construction theme. They both had things I liked about them. Finally, I decided to take the pieces of each theme that I liked the best and put them together into my own custom theme.

So, I started with the Bob the Builder and ordered plates, cups, napkins and favor boxes. We didn't need to order any kind of package since we were only having a family party and didn't need invitations and such.

Then I went to the Construction page and ordered yellow hard hats, construction tape, construction traffic signs, small die-cast construction vehicles, and the construction cake decorating kit. I was really excited about this theme for some reason, so I couldn't wait for the stuff to come in the mail. It was only a few days -- and I wasn't disappointed!

Finally the night before...

I had an absolute ball getting ready for the party the night before. We strung up construction tape all over the place, hung up construction signs, got the favor boxes ready, tested out the construction hats to make sure they would fit (okay they were just fun to wear while decorating), and I made the cake.

I absolutely loved making this cake -- You can see a picture of it below. I didn't really like the ideas they had on the site for a construction cake , so I made up my own. I used the die cast construction vehicles and the signs and construction cones from the kit to make a construction scene on the cake. I even dug up little pieces of cake to make it look like the "big diggers" were hard at work.

You may think that it's silly to go to so much trouble for a three year old birthday, but they remember more than we think. The other day my son asked me about his "big digger" cake and if I would make him another one. Needless to say, the Construction Birthday was a huge success. So much so that he didn't even notice that he didn't have friends over like his sister did.
