Free Kid Crafts Are Great For Kids and Parents Too!

As a mother of three active kids, I learned the value of doing art and crafts projects with my children when my oldest was still a toddler. You're probably aware of the many ways that doing kid crafts positively affects children...

  • Builds positive self image
  • Encourages self-discipline
  • Rewards hard work and diligence
  • Promotes eye-hand coordination
  • Cultivates a love of learning
  • Fosters cooperation with others
  • Encourages their imagination

... Just to name a few. That's all well and good for kids. As parents, we want the best for our children and will do whatever it takes to give them the best life we can, but do we have to do kid crafts?!?

Okay, that's what I used to think. Doing kid crafts, especially toddlers and preschoolers seemed like such a pain in the neck. I used to think that it was too messy, hard to organize, and really not worth the effort until they got a little older.

Then I tried it a couple of times and found out that doing these types of activities really made my job as a parent soooo much easier!

Once I found age-appropriate projects that would work with all three of my children and got myself organized, the parental benefits started rolling in...

  • The kids argued less among themselves and with me
  • Discipline became easier and less necessary
  • They played together better, even developed their own little games
  • I didn't have to constantly entertain them anymore
  • My oldest started helping me more with the younger ones and even wanted to help in the housework
  • They all became easier to handle when we went out

You get the picture. The point is that kid crafts really made a big difference in our daily lives! Now we do a project of some kind nearly every day and everyone is happier!

The only problem that I've run across since we started with our daily kid craft time is coming up with new ideas every day.

That is why and how this site was born.

First, I wanted to share some of the little tricks I've learned in raising my own children and how art and crafts have helped me be a better parent. Second, I wanted to share some of the resources that I've found online that have really helped me. Third, I love working on websites and wanted to start a website of my own as a hobby (That's what I did before raising children consumed my life.).

I sincerely hope that you find this site useful, thought-provoking, and inspiring. If you know of a good source that I have missed or you have a great craft or printable idea that you would like to see, please drop me an email and let me know!

Oh... don't forget to subscribe to Kid Crafts Magazine too!

Happy Crafting,

Chris Yates

Kid Craft Ideas
Coming up with new kid craft ideas is probably the most difficult part of doing crafts with kids. The first hurdle to overcome is deciding what is age-appropriate for your child. This can be especially difficult with very young children. After all, every child is different. Some have better coordination or attention spans for their age than others. You know your child better than anyone, so use your own instincts on this one. Crafting with older children can also be difficult because you have to find craft ideas that will keep their interest and be challenging enough for them to do.

Holiday Craft Ideas
These holiday theme sheets were designed to be used on each of the holidays. In some cases, there are enough craft projects and ideas to work for several days, for example: a week of Halloween or the ten days of Christmas. When I first started putting up these craft ideas, I concentrated only on little kid crafts... Now we are also including more challenging crafts too

Kid Painting Ideas
It's a great opportunity to teach children how to think outside the box and use things you wouldn't normally think about painting with in their projects. You can use objects instead of brushes, different kinds of paint, paint different surfaces, use templates or stencils, or even use parts of their bodies. Painting with children can also be a great way for them to experiment, learn cause and affect, learn about colors and how they mix. Here are my kid painting ideas.

Finger Puppets
Don't limit yourself to just the patterns below, let your kids get creative and make up their own finger puppets out of materials they have around the house. You'll be surprised at the finger puppets that they'll come up with! The cups from egg cartons, paper cups, paper bowls, popsicle sticks, pencils, and plastic spoons all make a great start for a finger puppet. Then all you have to do is give it a little character with scraps of felt, yarn, material, fun foam, paper, buttons, etc. When they're all done, help them put on a play with their new creations!

My Personal Children's Product Reviews
I've put together a collection of my own personal reviews of what I think are the best children's products available. These are all products that I've used myself, or my children have used, so you can trust that the reviews are my genuine opinion.
